Rational Choice Theory and Genomics

چکیده
I HAD BETTER BEGIN BY CONFESSING that I am not an enthusiast for rational choice theory (hereafter RCT). It is not uncommon for devotees of RCT to suggest that it provides a quite general tool for understanding human behaviour, and should largely supersede traditional historical, cultural, and related theoretical approaches. While I am happy to acknowledge that RCT may provide a useful set of tools for certain specific kinds of problems, the attempts to apply it to almost every sphere of human activity seem to me somewhat grotesque. Indeed, I am generally sceptical of attempts to discover a general theoretical approach to human nature, and claims for this sort of application of RCT strike me as some of the most exaggerated. In an ambitious recent book, economist and philosopher of science Don Ross (2005) acknowledges that rational choice does not really have application to humans, but opines that it is perfectly suitable for describing the behaviour of many insects. But rather than concluding, as I have, that rational choice theory is of very limited use for understanding humans, Ross argues instead that the human mind is actually a loose confederation of insectlike components. So once one has found the right structural level at which to apply the RCT machinery, humans turn out to be perfectly

Rational Choice Theory: An Overview
It seems easy to accept that rationality involves many features that cannot be summarized in terms of some straightforward formula, such as binary consistency. However, this recognition does not immediately lead to alternative characterizations that might be regarded as satisfactory, even though the inadequacies of the traditional assumptions of rational behavior standard used in economic theo...
متن کاملRational Choice Theory: A Cultural Reconsideration
Economists have heralded the formulation of the expected utility theorem as a universal method of choice under uncertainty. In their seminal paper, Stigler and Becker (Stigler & Becker, 1977) declared that “human behavior can be explained by a generalized calculus of utility-maximizing behavior” (p.76). The universality of the rational choice theory has been widely criticized by psychologists, ...

متن کاملNon Uniform Rational B Spline (NURBS) Based Non-Linear Analysis of Straight Beams with Mixed Formulations
Displacement finite element models of various beam theories have been developed traditionally using conventional finite element basis functions (i.e., cubic Hermite, equi-spaced Lagrange interpolation functions, or spectral/hp Legendre functions). Various finite element models of beams differ from each other in the choice of the interpolation functions used for the transverse deflection w, tota...
متن کاملRational choice theory
The purpose of rational choice theory is to explain social phenomena by assuming rational choice at the actor’s level. To realize this purpose, the theory assumes two mechanisms: choice by actors and the macro–micro–macro transition. After explaining these mechanisms, this article first shows how rational choice theory successfully explains the problem of social order embodied in various fields...
